Redesign: Habari and HTML5

What seems like a long time ago now, I discovered an open source project called Habari. Here was this relatively small group of people, a few of whom I was already paying attention to1, building a new blogging platform. For whatever reason, it caught my attention, and I'm very glad it did. I spent hour upon hour avoiding work and learning about Habari. The more I dug into the source the more it opened my eyes to what elegant PHP looked like. The MVC pattern and some of the class patterns used in the Habari codebase are beautiful things. Why do I blog?

Recently Skippy asked, 'why do you blog?' I was commenting on that and it got kind of long, so I thought I'd record it here. The short answer is, I don't know, and I'm not sure I need to know. But since this is all about figuring out the answer, I guess I'll play along. A good place to start with figuring out why I blog is probably to look at the content and see where that leads me, and the answer is that it's mostly personal - Laura and Aidan, my wife and best friend respectively seem to be ... more

You might have noticed a change.

Yep, I've applied another mask to the increasingly pocked face of sw'as. I had been preparing for full on facelift, but I've since decided on a more holistic approach is what's required. This little corner of the 'net will soon be joining the growing number of corners powered by Habari. Hence I've decided not to bother going nuts with a redisign and writing a new theme for WordPress which I'll just have to convert. It might take a bit longer, but it'll be worth it.

I feel exposed

You might have noticed that sw'as looks a touch naked. Well, although I missed out on CSS Naked Day I decided I'd go ahead and strip off anyway. I'm currently going through a very live and probably quite long re-design of the site. I've been meaning to re-design for ages, but hadn't got around to it; hopefully this will force me. It shouldn't be too long until we're resplendent in a wonderful new gown. Until then you may avert your eyes (or just look anyway if you don't mind getting a little risqué).

Frangipani II

So, the new design1 is on the field and so far, seems to be kicking ass. I'm pretty happy with this one, it's certainly the most fully fledged WordPress theme I've made, as well as being quite attractive. It basically came about because there were lingering issues with the last design in IE. Damn IE. I'm particularly happy with the 1000 words section (which uses a new plugin, more on that later). You can basically browse my entire Flickr account on this website now, including comments, tags, and even notes2 which is ultra cool. Some of that was possible in ... more
