I was first introduced to Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights by Miss Scott, one of my high school English teachers1, while we were studying the book by Emily Brontë. I paid the song almost no attention at the time, but the book I recall disliking. I think my dislike was a function of the incredible inaccessibility of the prose. Despite that, Miss Scott's enthusiastic teaching of the book sunk in and I'm very happy to be able to say I've read it (and tried unsuccessfully to read it again since).
After hearing a cover of Kate Bush's original on the radio ... more
Pitigliano Top 10

I've always felt as if I'm missing out on something when it comes to music. I feel like I was late to the game, and I'm still catching up. I'm certain I didn't really know anything at all about music until I was in high school and even though there are songs from before then that will bring back memories - good and bad - I couldn't name them. Even well into high school I don't think my interest in being a music fan had reached tipping point and my music taste certainly hadn't matured to a point where I ... more
Celebrating Awesomeness
§
Flicking through my feeds this morning, I discovered (via skipp.net) that today is International Day of Awesomeness. Looking through Scott's list of things that are awesome, I realised I too have a bunch of things and people in my life that I think are awesome and/or regularly perform feats of awesomeness. While this realisation seems pretty obvious in retrospect, it's one of those things that just needs pointing out before you take the time to think about it.
Reading a little further, I discover that the day is at least partly inspired by The Show with Ze Frank, probably the ... more
Hi from London

Probably the final London instalment from Laura:
Hello again!
I was sitting at work today, talking about Indian saris, and my boss Phil mentioned a sari he'd seen that was the colour electric blue. Of course, being an Australian child of the 80s, I started singing Electric Blues. Suddenly my colleagues were strangers; they did not know the words. They did not know the song. And they certainly didn't have a clue who Icehouse was. A thought came into my head: it's time to go home. So this afternoon, Simon and I paid for our flights back to Australia.
Although ... more
Hype Machine
§
I'm not really sure I've got room in my life for another music based website, but lately last.fm radio has been leaving me uninspired. Today I discovered the The Hype Machine and after a week or so of mostly listening to the office radio station of choice1, an afternoon of The Hype Machine's latest tracks has been a welcome relief.
On another music front, I'm off to Gotye live at Scala tonight! Get warmed up (or see what you're missing) by playing Gotye at The Hype Machine. And best of all, once you've signed up they'll even Scrobble your tracks! ... more
