Celebrating Awesomeness

Flicking through my feeds this morning, I discovered (via skipp.net) that today is International Day of Awesomeness. Looking through Scott's list of things that are awesome, I realised I too have a bunch of things and people in my life that I think are awesome and/or regularly perform feats of awesomeness. While this realisation seems pretty obvious in retrospect, it's one of those things that just needs pointing out before you take the time to think about it. Reading a little further, I discover that the day is at least partly inspired by The Show with Ze Frank, probably the ... more

Amazon.com.au - Ahh, now I understand

After recently arriving back home from a year in the UK, I've been increasingly frustrated with the lack of availability and high price of books here in Australia. More than that, I didn't understand why there are no good online book retailers in Australia, even the good physical retailers don't have good online stores - none of them1. That was, until I read an article today by Chris Berg which flicked the light switch for me - even if it didn't solve the problem. It had bewildered me before I left that there were no good online book sellers in ... more

Powerfully Confirming What I Already Knew

About a week ago I started reading Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion. I'm around about one third of the way through, and already it is, without question, the best non-fiction book I've ever read. There is quotable passage after quotable passage. They're all extremely educational. Yesterday on my way home, I read my favourite passage yet, and it's not even a Dawkins original. He's quoting an answer given by Jim Watson to a proposition posed in an interview that science is all about how things work and religion is about what it's all for. Well I don't think we're for ... more

Visiting Cornwall and Mrs Dalloway

Hanging out with Mum, Dad and Hanna was a real highlight of our trip deep into Cornwall over the weekend, as well as getting to know Morten a bit more. It was good to get a glimpse of some of the things Hannah is drawn to. Visiting St. Michael's Mount and the Minack Theatre were wonderful experiences, but it was the company of loved ones which made the five hour journeys too and from London more than worthwhile. The Minack Theatre was amazing! It really needs to be seen to be believed; best in person, but here's a Flickr slideshow ... more

Economics is fun!

Last weekend I did some thing I haven't done in a long time, read a novel from cover to cover in under two days. The book in question was Freakoncomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner which I got for my birthday. Having studied finance I've had a big enough taste of economics the know how much fun it can be1 and this book confirms it. Economics can be applied to anything and heaps of really cool observations can be made. Freakonomics uses interesting questions to give you a lesson in economics and teach you something you might ... more
